Tandem encourages community mobilization to solve neighbourhood security problems.
The City of Montreal urban security program adopts a community-based approach that encourages community mobilization and a shared vision of solving security-related problems that respects local realities and needs. The program also works to create a network of solidarity and discussion between various stakeholders from all walks of life: residents and politicians, community organizations and merchants, municipal administration and public institutions, and local and regional discussion roundtables.
Tandem's strength lies in the involvement of residents and community organizations which, from the very start, have put their hearts and energy into making Montreal a great city to live in, a city where they can move about, work, grow up and play in a safe, worry-free environment. Its interventions target children, adults, and the elderly, both male and female, from all cultural groups and communities.
In its many years of operation, this involvement has earned both the program (as well as the City of Montreal) worldwide recognition for its innovative ideas on crime prevention and its role as one of the leaders in the field of urban security. The program even garnered a "good practices" mention from the United Nations Human Settlements Program, UN-HABITAT.
